This is What the Internet is For

I was tipped off today by Penny Arcade about a service called Pandora. It's streaming radio, but rather than just playing an endless loop of whatever the creator likes, a team of people has started to organize and classify music in terms of structure, melody and, to an extent, lyrics over the traditional genres. In order to create your own station you start with an artist or song, then Pandora picks similar songs based on it's new classification system allowing you to endorse or veto the songs it picks. It's pretty cool.

This is what I think the internet is really for. This is where it shines. It's more than just someone putting out their favorite songs to see if they can convince a few people to like an alternative band or two. And it's also doing more with an idea than just having it sit there or only being showed to a limited number of people. It's taking the skills that others have, and using it in a way that benefits other people in a way that would be hard for them to alone or even within their own circle of acquaintances.

I feel like some people don't realize just what the internet can be used for. But because it allows, nay thrives for feedback from whoever is viewing your content we don't just having streaming radio, we have radio that is tailor made. We don't just have a flat encyclopedia, but one that is dynamic and able to be updated faster than you can print out its articles. And yes, it all comes back to the fact that you can not only play games with and against a real person, but get to know them and forge a real relationship.

Of course, the corresponding problem with the Internet (which, quite sadly but quite predictably and obviously, technophiles are reluctant to address) is that any such application also renders judgment answerable to the multitudes, which, by either statistical analysis or simple common sense, lack the judgment to accurately evaluate much of anything.

I Love Nerds

I'm too lazy to post a picture, but that's what my new sweatshirt says ^_^ Thank you JC Penney for allowing me to buy a $35 item of clothing for just under $15 because of a sale and coupon. To elaborate it's blue with a kangaroo pocket and has snoopy dressed in a tweed jacket and bow tie with "I Love Nerds." written below him. <3

The reason I'm too lazy to take a picture though, is b/c I'm finally copying all my new cds! I was having trouble with my cd-rw drive, but I think the actual problem was just with the program I was using... could be wrong however. But yeah this afternoon/evening I've burned almost a dozen cds that I had bought in the past... 8 months or so since my drive was acting screwy (or burning program, either one.)

It's just very funny b/c I was comparing how I label cds to the ones that Scott has burned for me. We are very different with a sharpie in hand. He neatly writes the tile very small on the exactly line/space provided for such things in small caps with correct punctuation and leaves the rest of the cd blank. I however ignore most set title marking space on the cd, and write fairly big in my normal messy script not really worrying if the correct things get capitalized or not and often add a small drawing that reflects the album/cd art of the actual disc so that there isn't a lot of blank space.
